Dive Site Overview

Sail Rock, also known as Hin Bai, is a stunning underwater granite rock pinnacle situated between the islands of Koh Phangan and Koh Tao . The rock towers 15 meters above the surface and drops to over 40 meters below, creating a dramatic underwater landscape that changes dramatically with depth .

Because of its isolated offshore location, Sail Rock acts as a biological magnet, offering one of the highest densities of pelagic marine life in the region . The site’s circular shape means you can experience dramatic sunlight on one side and ominous shade on the other, adding to the sense of adventure with every dive .

The signature feature is The Chimney – a vertical swim-through that divers can enter at 18 meters and exit at around 6 meters, surrounded by thousands of schooling fish . The site is large enough for multiple dive paths, and many divers choose to spend both dives here rather than moving to another site

Common Marine Life

Sail Rock is famous for its pelagic encounters and schooling fish. The nutrient-rich waters brought by the often-strong currents attract an incredible diversity of marine life that you won’t find at shallower sites .

Among the most dramatic sights are the schools of chevron barracuda, which swirl in huge silver formations around the rock pillars. You’ll also see trevally, snapper, fusiliers, and jacks hunting in the blue water . Giant barracuda – some over two meters long – patrol the deeper areas, while queenfish and Spanish mackerel streak through the currents .

For those who look closely, the rock’s nooks and crevices hide moray eels, curious shrimp and crabs, and colorful nudibranchs . Groupers lurk in cavernous overhangs, adding to the sense of drama at this deep site.

The highlight for many divers is the chance to encounter whale sharks. While not guaranteed, Sail Rock is among the better spots in the Gulf for a sighting, most commonly from March through June . Green turtles are also occasional visitors to the nutrient-rich waters around the pinnacle .
