Dive Site Overview
Japanese Gardens is one of the three large bays frequented by divers and snorkelers on Koh Tao, situated directly opposite Twins Bay and separated only by the sandbar that connects two of the peaks of Koh Nangyuan . The site’s compact layout allows for long, relaxed dive times, making it ideal for slow exploration and extended shallow profiles .
The reef begins at paddling depth (just 1–3 meters) and gently slopes to around 10–14 meters at its deepest points . The variety of coral here is exceptional. Towering heads of Compact Coral and Lobed Pore Coral reach impressive heights of up to 5 meters, interspersed with fields of Staghorn, Mushroom, and Slipper Corals .
Living within the Lobed Pore Coral, you’ll find colorful Christmas Tree Worms and Boring Clams, adding to the site’s visual interest
Common Marine Life
Japanese Gardens is home to a wonderfully diverse range of marine life, all easily observed in its clear, shallow waters. Among the most beloved residents are the clownfish, which live symbiotically with the anemones that dot the reef. You’ll also regularly see butterflyfish, parrotfish, damselfish, and several species of angelfish swimming among the coral heads. The site is particularly famous among macro photographers for its gobies – including the colorful metallic shrimp goby – which hover just above the sandy patches. Peeking from crevices in the coral, you can often spot moray eels and, resting on the bottom, blue-spotted ribbontail rays. Green and hawksbill turtles are frequent visitors, grazing on the coral and sponges. For those who look closely, the coral heads themselves are alive with Christmas tree worms (in brilliant yellows, blues, and reds) and boring clams. With patience, you may also find nudibranchs, shrimp, and other small macro life hiding among the reef’s many nooks.
