Dive Site Overview

Chumphon Pinnacle consists of one main granite pinnacle and several smaller rock clusters arranged in a rough oval running north to south, covering an area of approximately 100 meters square . The top of the pinnacle sits at 12–18 meters and is entirely carpeted in magnificent sea anemones . From there, the granite walls drop dramatically to a sandy bottom at 35–40 meters, creating a spectacular underwater landscape that changes dramatically with depth.

The site features a massive crack near the southern end, large enough to swim through, and a swim-through near the central buoy line. As you descend along the pinnacle walls, you’ll feel like you’re on the edge of a cliff face, with countless holes and crevices to explore. The distance from shore typically ensures superior visibility, making Chumphon Pinnacle Koh Tao’s most reliable site for big fish action.

Because the site is a fair distance offshore, it’s exposed to passing pelagics from the open ocean — unpredictable visitors that can include sailfish, oceanic whitetip sharks, and bull sharks, in addition to the more regular whale sharks.

Common Marine Life

Chumphon Pinnacle is famous for its pelagic encounters and incredible biodiversity. The nutrient-rich waters and strong currents attract marine life that you simply won’t find at shallower, more sheltered sites.

At the top of the pinnacle, the granite is completely carpeted in sea anemones, which are home to pink anemonefish (clownfish) darting among their stinging tentacles for protection . As you descend, you’ll be surrounded by a kaleidoscope of anthias, butterflyfish, and blue-green chromis dancing around the reef . Blue-ringed angelfish, flagfish, and butterflyfish are common throughout the site.

Look carefully in the cracks and crevices of the rocks, and you’ll find moray eels (including white-eyed moray eels), scorpionfish, crabs, shrimp, and colorful nudibranchs for macro enthusiasts . Pacific lionfish are often found at the southern end of the pinnacle, and giant groupers lurk in the deeper areas, shyly turning away from divers who get too close .

The blue water surrounding the pinnacle is where the real action happens. Massive schools of chevron barracuda, fusiliers, trevally, jacks, and batfish create swirling silver formations that are spectacular to witness . Giant barracuda — some over two meters long — patrol the deeper waters alongside king mackerel, lying in wait to ambush unsuspecting prey .

For many divers, the highlight is the chance to encounter whale sharks. Chumphon Pinnacle has the highest density of whale shark sightings in the Gulf of Thailand, with peak seasons from March to May and September to October . While never guaranteed, this is statistically the best place in the region to see these gentle giants.

Great barracuda and trevally are present year-round, and lucky divers may spot Bryde’s whales, sailfish, or even bull sharks and oceanic whitetip sharks passing through .
